Summer Family Time and a Broken Wrist

Summer is flying by at an incomprehensible speed. It’s surprising considering that the first 3 months of quarantine felt like they would never end. But here we are, mid-summer, and it feels like we’re already running out of time to enjoy the outdoors before winter locks us up again.

My sister just spent two weeks with us leading up to the 4th of July. Maryland was starting to go back to “normal” so we took the opportunity to do a few things over her visit. We spent a day at Rehoboth Beach eating at Kaisy’s Delights, Thrashers, Archer’s (best ice cream and lemonade), Louie’s Pizza, and Dolle’s. We also spent a few hours hanging out and swimming at the beach. Henry really loved going back and forth between the sand and the waves but since the water was cool, his hooded towel came in handy. We bought it while we were in Australia, but here’s a similar one with good reviews (affiliate link).

We went to the Patuxent Wildlife Reserve the morning after Hanna arrived and although we weren’t expecting rain for a couple more hours, it suddenly started pouring cats and dogs 15 minutes into our walk. We’d brought umbrellas just in case but Henry was the only person who got back in the car dry, The rest of us were completely soaked head to toe. It was a throwback to this crazy hike Brady and I did at Lake Michigan 5 years ago! The weather cleared up and we spent the afternoon walking around downtown Annapolis.

The following weekend, Hanna and I hiked the Billy Goat Trail because she’s been wanting to do it for years. Brady and I have done it twice (first time in 2016the second time in 2017), so Brady stayed at home with Henry since the hike isn’t kid-friendly. It was an insanely humid morning but it was still a fun 2-hour hike with great views as always. I love the rock scrambling on this hike and it remains one of my top favorite Maryland hikes!

In Henry’s almost 2 years of life, Brady and I have only gone on 2 baby-free dates… so before Hanna left, she graciously offered to watch Henry for a few hours so we could go have a little us time. We went to Neo’s Pizza in Annapolis and relished in the few moments we had out to ourselves. If you ever go to Neo’s, I can highly recommend the fried white cheddar curds. They were fantastic!

We left for a whirlwind trip to Massachusetts on the 3rd to spend time with Brady’s family. On the 4th of July, we went up to his family cabin where Henry had the time of his life picking wild blueberries in the fields. While we were there, Brady’s grandfather mentioned he was donating his old pop-up camper but offered that we could take it. We scrambled to get a tow bar for our CRV but couldn’t complete the install due to a problem with the frame. Brady returned to Massachusetts the following weekend to pick it up after completing the installation. We’ve got a few camping trips planned so stay tuned for those adventures!

The final update is less than exciting. Henry’s an active kid which means he’s constantly climbing on everything. He lost a battle with my spinning office chair just after I had walked out of the room on Friday and ended up breaking his wrist. He’s had some pain and lots of stress during office visits, but overall he’s been tolerating it surprisingly well. We’re supposed to be getting a cast this afternoon so I hope that goes ok. If you have ever had a toddler with a broken bone, please let me know of any tips you have. I’m also looking for some kids show episodes that feature breaking a bone so if you have any recommendations, please share them with me!

I hope your summer has been going well wherever you are! What have you been up to?
