Henry’s Book Club – November 2019

I have always loved reading books. There’s something about getting lost in other times and places or learning more about life. It’s important to me that I do what I can to share this love of reading with my son. I also want to excite other parents about reading with their kids by sharing some of our favorite books to read together. So, I’ve created Henry’s Book Club to share monthly reading tips and reading recommendations.

It’s notable that early and consistent reading to a child helps them to thrive, not only intellectually but it builds their social, emotional, and character development. I try to do what I can to set my child up for success so I put daily effort into stimulating Henry’s mind through reading. I regularly see Henry doing certain things that I know he’s only learned from reading books with me but I know he’s also absorbing things that I can’t see the effects of yet.

Henry is currently 15 months old so book recommendations are primarily aimed at his age group though some of the current/upcoming recommendations will be appealing for kids up to the K-2 range as well.

Henry’s Book Club November Reading Tip:

Where to get books?

Henry already has a very large book collection but I’ve spent very little on acquiring these books. His book collection comes from a variety of sources:

  • The Library. So many of the amazing books we’ve been able to read this year have come from our local library. As long as you return things by their due date, these books are all FREE!
  • Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. This is an amazing resource! If you live in a participating area, your child can receive one free book a month from birth until kindergarten! Use the link to find out more and sign up.
  • There are a few books from my childhood on his bookshelves.
  • Thrift Stores: I usually pay $0.50-$1.00 for children’s books at thrift stores like Goodwill and Once Upon a Child.
  • Gifts for birthday and Christmas.

Henry’s Book Club – November 2019 Picks

The Pout-Pout Fish

The Pout-Pout Fish is a book that my sister gave to Henry for Christmas last year and is a top favorite. Henry brings this book to me more than any other book and wants to go through it multiple times in a row. Luckily it’s a super fun and creative rhyming story about a glum fish who learns about who he really is. This is a top-rated children’s book that also has a few sequels.

Baby See, Baby Do

Baby See, Baby Do was a library find that was so well-loved that we had to have our own copy. It’s a book with real babies doing actions and motions and it has a mirror panel to one side so that your baby can practice doing these things too.

Flamingo

Flamingo is a colorful counting storybook with a fun flamingo feather cut out in the center.

Letโ€™s Go!: A Flip-and-Find-Out Book

Letโ€™s Go!: A Flip-and-Find-Out Book is a more recent library find but is a strong favorite at the moment. This book would work particularly well with preschoolers as well because it’s a who-am-I? book with border pages shaped and designed like the wheels of the different vehicles you’re trying to figure out. The book features multiple vehicles including a garbage truck, a bicycle, and a police car. So much fun for little vehicle lovers!

Please and Thank You

Please and Thank You is another library book that I’ve been asked to read over and over again. The point is to teach the concept of “Please and Thank You” by using a lift the flap to show the before and after of saying please and thank you. Henry loves to read this book with me but he also spends a lot of time looking through this one on his own.

First Look and Find Paw Patrol

Neither myself nor Henry has ever seen even a minute of Paw Patrol but that doesn’t stop this Look and Find Paw Patrol book from being another favorite. I can tell that this $0.50 find from Once Upon a Child is going to be a favorite for a while to come. It’s a large board book with colorful pictures with new objects or creatures to find on each page. Henry isn’t quite ready to do the picture search on his own but he loves pointing out random things on the pages, especially balls.
