Baby #1 Gender Reveal!

Last Wednesday, I had an exciting appointment where I was able to find out the gender of our new baby! I was 16 weeks and 1 day at the appointment and when she asked if we were wanting to know the gender and I said yes right away! Brady wasn’t able to be at the appointment with me and it was going to be another 10 hours before he was home from work… so I gave in and did the gender reveal over a video call while I was shopping for groceries at ALDI- ha! It might not be the most romantic way to find out, but it would have been hard to keep it a secret all day and he was dying to know.

Before this pregnancy even began, I knew that a detailed and hyped up gender reveal party with all our friends and family wasn’t something I was really into. It’s a lot of work to plan a party and as it is we don’t even have our own place to invite everyone over to. That being said, we still wanted a fun way to let our families know what we were expecting so we had an impromptu mini family shindig at my step-mom’s parents house on Saturday afternoon. The whole region was pretty much out of power due to high winds Friday-Saturday so we weren’t sure if we were even going to be able to throw a party. The only prep for this party was 6 balloons, 12 confetti poppers (for the gender reveal), plus tea and cookies.

Before I do the lil internet gender reveal, let’s see if you can guess based off of the old wives’ tales.

Gender Reveal Predictions

  1. Carrying high (girl) or low (boy)? I would say low. Boy.
  2. Shape of bump: infront/basketball (boy) or all over (girl)? I feel like it mostly goes out. Boy.
  3. Moody (girl) or Mellow (boy)? I’ve had emotional moments but I’d say I’ve been way more calm than I thought I’d be so Mellow. Boy.
  4. Sweet (girl) or Salty (boy)? Salty all the way. I’ve been craving things like mashed potatoes, potato salad, steamed vegetables… Boy.
  5. Morning sickness: light/none (boy) or intense (girl)? I’ve had the worst nausea this pregnancy and even at 17 weeks I’m still struggling though it has improved some over the last few weeks. Girl.
  6. Pregnancy Glow: bright and clear (boy) or tired and break outs (girl)? I feel like I’ve had generally clear skin and I’m fairly glowy now that I’m eating more and not as sick. Boy.
  7. The Linea Nigra: above and below belly button (boy) or just below (girl)? Don’t have one at all yet. Update a few hours later… I think I actually do have one! I hadn’t noticed it because it’s really under the bump but I just spotted a little line when I was checking out my belly in the mirror. Just below: Girl.
  8. Hair: Full and Glossy (boy) or dull and limp (girl)? I have been really struggling with my hair lately so this has to be Girl.
  9. The ring test: spins in circle (girl) or like a pendulum (boy)? Pendulum. Boy.
  10. Baby’s heart rate: above 140 bpm (girl) or below 140 (boy)? The baby’s heart rate has ranged between 158-164 bpm over the last 5 weeks. Girl.
  11. Chinese Calendar based on age and month you conceived. Boy.
  12. Mayan system based on age and year of conception: both are odd numbers. Girl.

Boy: 7, Girl: 5

So what do you think…?

Family members making predictions:

It’s a BOY!

Surprise! Maybe not though. Everyone in my family and I mean everyone (grandparents, parents, siblings, great-grandparents) thought it was a boy except for my brother, Caleb. He was really hoping for a girl. I don’t know what it was but there must have been a vibe because everyone was team boy at our gender reveal.

Brady was pretty excited and even a bit emotional to find out he was going to have a son. It’s crazy and emotional for me to even type that! I think part of me had slight hopes for a girl but only from the point of wanting all the cute baby girl clothes and dresses. I tried not to put too much thought into it because this whole time, the focus has been on making sure we have a healthy baby and I didn’t want to get too tied up into thoughts of gender until we actually knew! Also, when you find out it’s a boy, you usually have more confidence than finding out it’s a girl – just in case he’s being a little shy in the ultrasound! I absolutely fell in love with this little outfit at Target the other day so I’m still excited about finding adorable baby boy clothes.

We’ve been talking about baby names for a long time, I mean we got pregnant for the first time over a year and a half ago. We think we’ve picked out a name and have even been calling him that when it’s just the two of us around. The name is something that is 100% going to stay between the two of us until he’s born for 3 reasons: we reserve the right to change our minds, we don’t want to feel like anyone’s disappointed in the name choice if they think they can change our minds, and we want the excitement of being able to make that announcement once he’s finally arrived.

So that’s all for today, I’m planning on sharing a pregnancy update this week as well since I’m now 17 weeks and I’d like to be able to do an update at least every other week. Hopefully at some point I’ll get back around to sharing other things going on in my life but for right now this is a pretty part of it!

Thanks for reading!
