11 of My Favorite Christmas Movies

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I love the holiday season and spending time with my family. My mom always made the holidays so special for us and I know her love for the season has been passed down to me. We just passed the 6th anniversary of her passing and it’s still so hard to pick up the pieces of a broken heart and celebrate the holidays without her but Mom taught me to love the holidays and appreciate the quality family time so Thanksgiving-Christmas time is my favorite time of year.  I look forward to playing Christmas music, setting up the tree, and snuggling up together to watch Christmas movies.

Shadow at Christmas and Christmas Movies

It may seem early, but I know a lot of people start watching Christmas movies around this time and I wanted to make sure to share my favorites! There are so many great Christmas movies to chose from but I’ve narrowed it down to my top 11 favorites. Any of the Christmas movies in the numbers 1-9 slots put me in an instant happy Christmas mood but I have tried to order them anyways to give you a sense of my favorites. Numbers 10-11 are less “classic” to me but nice Christmas movies with romantic and adult centered themes.

11. The Holiday

Let’s just put aside the fact that we see Jack Black trying to play a role seriously and the rest of the movie is pretty enjoyable.

10. Love Actually

Take all the best British actors and make a Christmas rom-com. Poof. Love Actually.

9. The Radio City Christmas Spectacular Featuring The Rockettes

This isn’t a movie but you can find the actual Radio City Hall performance streaming on Netflix. I love watching this because A) The Rockettes are phenomenal and B) I’ve seen this performance live a few times with my family and it always brings back good memories of going to NYC at Christmastime.

8. A Charlie Brown Christmas

I hear the name of this musical and instantly I hear the music… “Christmastime is here. Happiness and Cheer…” Another classic and I love that it’s short!

7. Home Alone 2: Lost in New York

Not as good as the first but Kevin McAllister is one cool kid so thank goodness they found a way to make a second movie work.

6. The Santa Claus

I actually prefer the second movie to the original but only slightly. The first one is such a classic and a must watch. I really like the 3rd one too so consider them all highly recommended!

5. Eloise at Christmastime

This is probably the most childish movie on the list (by most people’s standards) but I really love the story and Julie Andrews is in it which makes this an instant classic, right?

4. The Polar Express

This movie can be long and slow but I still really love this movie. This was often a movie my family would watch right after putting up the Christmas tree. “When Christmas Comes to Town” is also one of my favorite Christmas songs.

3. The Santa Claus 2

It’s silly, fun, sweet, a little romantic and a lot about family. Perfect Christmas movie.

2. Home Alone

It was a hard choice deciding for the number one spot so we can call this one tie for the number one spot. Home Alone was released a couple years before I was born so it was a movie I grew up watching every year and sometimes in between. And come on, didn’t we all wish we could lay awesome booby traps around our homes to catch the bad guys?

1. Elf

I saw this movie for the first time with my youth group when I was in middle school and I don’t know if I’ve ever laughed so much during a movie. Will Ferrell is usually over-the-top ridiculous but this movie is pure gold. I LOVE the story and I love Zooey Deschanel. When they sing “Baby, it’s Cold Outside” while Jovie is in the shower… best scene. There are so many quotables from this movie and it brings me so much joy. Please don’t tell me you hate this movie.
