Starting off on the right foot

So one of my goals for the year is to “become a runner”. The only way to really start on this goal is to start running so yesterday was day one. This is year 3 that I’m starting to run again but this time it’s at the beginning of the year and I’m planning on running all year long and making it a long time habit.

In 2015, I started running in preparation for the first time I did the Iron Girl Triathlon. While I was getting ready for the triathlon, I was also focusing on preparing for the other 2 disciplines and I wasn’t totally dedicated to becoming a runner. I started running again last year as I was prepping for the triathlon but I was in a lot of pain due to my back issues through the training cycle and quickly fell out of it after the race.

So third time’s the charm. To start out running this time, I’m going to be using the same app to train that I used the first time I did the triathlon. It’s the Active Couch to 5K app and it’s a 9 week program to help transition from run/walk into fully running a 5k. There have been a few updates to the app since the last time I used it and I also have a Garmin running watch that will help me see my pace throughout rather than just my overall average pace.

My Goals for 2017

We’re almost halfway through January and I’m finally sitting down to write my goals for the new year. Well I actually wrote them down last week but I’m finally getting around to blogging them 😉 Haha. I wanted to focus on some things from different categories other that the traditional, typical, and cliche fitness goals so I really spent some time thinking about the things that would help make me a happier, well rounded person. Since this is the year that *all my health dreams come true*, let’s start with fitness!

Fitness Goals

I’ve spent some time lately thinking about how I wished I’d grown up with more of an appreciation for fitness. I always took it for granted. My mom fed us healthy food, and we were encouraged to spend time being outdoors growing up but it wasn’t ingrained that it was for being fit, it was just fun. I wish I’d started running in high school because I think it’s something I would have really loved back then, even in middle school because I used to outrun all the boys when I was in elementary. Anyways, my point is that this year I’d really like to become a runner. Not just a jogger or I’m training for a tri kind of runner but a “regular” recreational runner.

With this in mind, at some point this year, or possibly early next year, I’d like to run a half marathon. I don’t think I’d ever want to run a full marathon but never say never, right?

Bathing cats, Christmas is coming, and goals for the rest of 2016

Can you believe that there’s only about 2 months left in 2016? This year started with travelling up to Michigan so Braden could attend his final 10 weeks of classes as a DPT student. In March, we moved in with the in-laws while he did his internships and searched for a job. Here we are almost 8 months later and we’re just about ready to move into our first home in Maryland! With less than 3 weeks til moving day, we’ve got a lot of sorting and packing to do.

We’re excited to be moving closer to his work and all our favorite date spots and I can’t wait to live less that 10 minutes from TWO different Targets! I’m looking forward to have my own kitchen again! It’s going to be easier to meal plan and eat more meals at home once we’re in our own space. It’s also going to be funny to see my Shadow baby roam more space than just our bedroom. Speaking of… it’s going to be amazing to get her litter box out of our room!

I gave her a bath today and she didn’t love it. Poor girl. I had to blow dry her because the house was too cold and she was shivering. She didn’t like that either but she forgave me after I gave her a few treats and a good brushing.

All bad things happen together at the same time

Can you believe that today is the last day of summer? I can’t believe fall is already here! I don’t love when sundown is getting earlier but it was perfect timing for me last night when I was picking up hubby from work. It was a spectacular drive.

On Sunday I went to the B&O Railroad museum with my dad, brother, step-sis, and hubby. I don’t have half the photos though because my phone is now dead forever. See below.

Why I broke up with the scale

So yesterday, Brady and I celebrated our second wedding anniversary! He ended up being at work late because it was his first day doing 100% of the case load and documentation but even so we got home by 5:30. We drove up to Columbia so we could go to the Cheesecake Factory for dinner. I was really torn because I really wanted the vegan cobb salad because it’s amazing but I was REALLY in a pasta mood. I went with the pasta which was good, but I probably should have followed my instincts and gotten the salad. Brady got the eggplant parmesan which is no fun because he knows I don’t like eggplant :-p

These are the only pictures we managed to take of ourselves. In the parking lot. We’re so romantic. <3

Summer Running and Sunsets

I don’t know how some people are able to find the energy to go running after a long day at work. It’s a mental battle just to get out the door when I’m tired and my body feels sluggish. On Tuesday, I texted my sister and told her she had to bug me until I’d gone for a run. She did a great job of being obnoxious and eventually I went just before sunset.

Usually, my general routine for running is to warm up for around 5 minutes, walk/run for 20 or so minutes and cool down for a few. This will get me to around 2 miles or a little more. I really need to start getting more distance in but I know I can’t run a few miles straight up. So my aim for the day was to walk 1 full mile, then run with a strong effort til I hit my threshold, and hit around three miles.

I finished with 2.97 miles + at least another .3 because I my watch took a while to connect to GPS and I stopped it as soon as I finished running.

My Running Splits:

  • 1.03 mi @ 16:34 min/mi
  • .52 mi @ 10:40 min/mi
  • .24 mi @ 16:03 min/mi
  • .42 mi @ 11:06 min/mi
  • .11 mi @ 17:43 min/mi
  • .63 mi @ 11:36 min/mi

Overall Distance – 2.97 mi

Overall Time – 41:06 min

Overall Average Pace – 13:50 min/mi

Running Distance – 1.57 miles

Running Average – 11:12 min/mi

I stopped for a minute during the run to quickly snap this picture. I loooove sunsets and it’s usually my favorite time of day to run because I get to enjoy more than if I was inside doing something else. I came back exhausted with wobbly legs especially after the large hill I had to walk up at the very end to get to the house. It was also very humid outside so I felt like I was swimming in sweat. I tried the NUUN tablets that I’d bought last week for the first time. I don’t think it’s supposed to make you feel different but it’s to help restore electrolyte balance. Whatever the case, it has barely any calories, no sugar and makes my water taste better. So win-win.
