Motivation Monday #5

Happy Boston Marathon Monday! Hope you all had a lovely weekend and a great Easter with your family yesterday.

I spent some time being frustrated because it seems as though the Boston Marathon organizers have sold out and the only way to view the marathon is by logging into NBC Sports with a cable package account. Thanks for making the decision to choose money over everything else that this race is supposed to stand for.

I’m not bitter.

Anywho. This last week I’ve been dealing with a few aches and pains that have prohibited me from running and even held back my step count for a couple days. I broke a 14-day streak of 10K+ steps per day. I strained a muscle in my hip flexor and though I’m not 100% positive, I’m pretty sure it happened while I was doing yoga. Serves me right for trying to stretch out my stiff body. I’m hoping that I’ll be able to start running again in the next few days as the pain keeps subsiding.

If you’re currently dealing with an injury and something else that’s keeping you from running, here are a few ideas to keep you fit and going. Do what you can but don’t hurt yourself even more!

Sugar Addiction Resources

I had mentioned at the beginning of last month that I was going to try Sarah Wilson’s “I Quit Sugar” 8-week program but she also advocates against fresh fruit. I really want to reset my diet by eating more fresh food than processed food but I know that being too restrictive with my diet will have me constantly craving and feeling miserable.

I can’t go on a strict diet. I can’t blatantly cut out sugar. My goal is to learn to listen to my body for its fullness cues. I don’t want to cut sugar out for a month or more and then at the end of it be craving all the sugary goodness I can lay my hands on.

So what’s the deal with sugar?

Losing a friend and my weekend

I’m still in shock. I still don’t have any words to express because I still don’t understand. Yesterday, the world lost a bright star. A young man who was going places. Someone who cared, someone who was respected and loved, someone who no one could say a bad word about. He was a high school classmate who I had literally just seen in church the day before and been up in front of church with him only 2 weeks ago. He passed away in his sleep, likely from underlying health conditions he’s had for a long time.

I’ve dealt with more than my fair share of loss and I don’t know if that makes any subsequent deaths easier or harder but this is the first friend of my age to pass away and I’m shaken. Please pray for his family and close friends who are devastated, and also for our whole church community who is really feeling this loss.

At one point, while I was processing the news, I started to feel angry and I really needed to just go for a run. Brady was having a pretty hard time with the news so we didn’t go right away, but we ended up going a couple hours later, just before dark. We’re still dealing with moderate winter temps so it was about 50 degrees and lightly raining when we started to run. It matched the way we were feeling.

My Goals for 2017

We’re almost halfway through January and I’m finally sitting down to write my goals for the new year. Well I actually wrote them down last week but I’m finally getting around to blogging them 😉 Haha. I wanted to focus on some things from different categories other that the traditional, typical, and cliche fitness goals so I really spent some time thinking about the things that would help make me a happier, well rounded person. Since this is the year that *all my health dreams come true*, let’s start with fitness!

Fitness Goals

I’ve spent some time lately thinking about how I wished I’d grown up with more of an appreciation for fitness. I always took it for granted. My mom fed us healthy food, and we were encouraged to spend time being outdoors growing up but it wasn’t ingrained that it was for being fit, it was just fun. I wish I’d started running in high school because I think it’s something I would have really loved back then, even in middle school because I used to outrun all the boys when I was in elementary. Anyways, my point is that this year I’d really like to become a runner. Not just a jogger or I’m training for a tri kind of runner but a “regular” recreational runner.

With this in mind, at some point this year, or possibly early next year, I’d like to run a half marathon. I don’t think I’d ever want to run a full marathon but never say never, right?

Apple Picking, Meal Planning, and Calorie Counting

You know how last week I posted about the various bad things that happened all in a row? I was determined to change my fates but not before getting punched a few times first. Apparently I can’t survive without a phone because it tells me everything I need to know, like what the temperature is and how I should dress for the day… so after my phone died, I got a new S7 and while in the process of looking for the right screen protector and case to buy, I dropped it when I was getting out of the car for church and smashed the screen on both top corners of the phone. Sigh. Then on Sunday, I accidentally broke my glasses beyond repair. I mean it was time for new ones but still… now I have to wear contacts until I can get new ones. I don’t love wearing glasses but ever since an eye infection I had in 2011 my eyes have not loved wearing contacts so I rarely wear them anymore.

September Goals!

Time to revisit those August goals and see how things went…

August Goals Revisited

  • Build core strength through my glutes, back and abs.
  • Continue to build on my fitness.
  • Significantly reduce sugar intake.
  • Work towards a regular bedtime and wake up routine and getting healthier sleep.

Maybe 1 for 4. I think I had a rough August because there were a lot of things going on in multiple aspects of my life and it was hard to start a routine going. Hanna left for college two weeks ago so I’ve been missing her. Brady was interviewing for jobs, accepted an offer, and has been working on licensing things, I’ve been doing various work including teaching Pre-K kids for a few days! By the way, they are the most adorable little kids ever and I want to adopt them all! I’ve definitely found my age group if I ever wanted to go into teaching.
