Thanksgiving Snapshots

Thanksgiving was almost a week ago and it feels like the time has passed by in a heartbeat! I love the holidays because of the special family time and I wanted to make soak in all the moments. With that being said, I took very few photos myself and anything I do have is basically a quick snapshot of the moment. These moments are still special and should be documented to look back on so here’s a glimpse of my Thanksgiving weekend.

I have a fairly large extended family and we had over 30 people gathered for our family’s Thanksgiving! I feel so blessed to have an amazing Grandma (who happens to be a fantastic cook) as the matriarch of the family to orchestrate everything. There were no turkeys for this vegetarian family but we served 15 of the best homemade pies. Would you believe I only ended up eating 3 slices myself? I had to have the classic pumpkin pie, my grandmas to-die-for vegan lemon cheesecake pie, and a chocolate-mint pudding pie. You’ll have to believe me when I say they were the best pies ever.

Another joy of this holiday was getting to meet this little fella for the first time. I spent at least a couple hours snuggling with the newest family member and it was baby heaven.

We didn’t get home from my grandma’s until late Thursday night so we quickly packed our bags for our weekend away and went to bed. First thing Friday morning we were out the door to the airport for Thanksgiving part 2 in Massachusetts.

Our trip was only a quick 36 hours up in Massachusetts to have Thanksgiving with my husband’s extended family. Brady and I shared an Airbnb with the siblings in-law on a lake just over the border into New Hampshire so that we wouldn’t be too far away from the festivities. We never had the time to explore around the lake, but I got to soak in the quiet morning air for two mornings which was still peaceful.

Saturday evening was the big Thanksgiving dinner for Brady’s family and I only have one blurry, awkward shot to share of the experience. In this picture, Brady is doing his annual recitation of the poem he learned back in elementary school: I Ate Too Much by Jack Prelutsky.

I ate too much turkey,
I ate too much corn,
I ate too much pudding and pie,
I’m stuffed up with muffins
And much too much stuffin’,
I’m probably going to die.

I piled up my plate
And I ate and I ate,
But I wish I had known when to stop,
For I’m so crammed with yams,
Sauces, gravies, and jams
That my buttons are starting to pop.

I’m full of tomatoes
And French fried potatoes,
My stomach is swollen and sore,
But there’s still some dessert,
So I guess it won’t hurt
If I eat just a little bit more.

It was a late night with his family before we had to get up with the sun on Sunday morning to make the drive back to Maryland with all the rest of New England on the roads. We played husbands-versus-wives Rook in the backseat before I watched The Holiday – which I’d downloaded from Amazon Prime before the drive. The Holiday is #11 on my Favorite Christmas Movies List if you want to check out my list.

That’s all I have to share from my Thanksgiving weekend. I hope you all had a beautiful weekend with your friends and loved ones. Next week we’re headed off on our Disney Christmas getaway so if you want to tag along for our adventure, I’m going to be sharing a bunch on Instagram/Stories. I’m so excited!

Where do you celebrate Thanksgiving and how many people do you celebrate Thanksgiving with?

Any special family traditions around Thanksgiving?

Christmas, Family Time, Holidays

11 of My Favorite Christmas Movies

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I love the holiday season and spending time with my family. My mom always made the holidays so special for us and I know her love for the season has been passed down to me. We just passed the 6th anniversary of her passing and it’s still so hard to pick up the pieces of a broken heart and celebrate the holidays without her but Mom taught me to love the holidays and appreciate the quality family time so Thanksgiving-Christmas time is my favorite time of year.  I look forward to playing Christmas music, setting up the tree, and snuggling up together to watch Christmas movies.

Shadow at Christmas and Christmas Movies

It may seem early, but I know a lot of people start watching Christmas movies around this time and I wanted to make sure to share my favorites! There are so many great Christmas movies to chose from but I’ve narrowed it down to my top 11 favorites. Any of the Christmas movies in the numbers 1-9 slots put me in an instant happy Christmas mood but I have tried to order them anyways to give you a sense of my favorites. Numbers 10-11 are less “classic” to me but nice Christmas movies with romantic and adult centered themes.  Continue Reading

St. Patrick’s Day Birthday

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

The only really awesome thing about turning 25 is getting to rent a car without the “under 25 tax” and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want to go out and just rent a car right now.

To celebrate the occasion, I’m sharing my 5 birthday fun facts and 20 things on my bucket list for 25!

5 Birthday Fun Facts

  1. The doctor who delivered me was Irish.
  2. 2 years ago I went to the hospital for the first time as a patient. It was also my first time in an ambulance. Let’s just say that my birthday wasn’t the best day of the year to figure out a new allergy.
  3. I’m going to confuse everyone by saying that my “American birthday” is technically the 16th since the time of day that I was born in Australia would technically have been the 16th in the US. But since I was born on the 17th where I was, I’m happy to keep it that way 🙂
  4. My mom used to get me a few special St. Patrick’s Day goodies for my birthday each year. I still have a few of them including the shamrock socks I got probably 10+ years ago that I loved.
  5. Today is also Katie Ledecky’s birthday!

A photo from my last birthday with my mom (turning 19)

Bucket List

  1. Go backpacking — I wanted to do this last year and it didn’t work out.
  2. Go to Australia — or at least start saving for a trip. It’s been over 5 years since the last time and I haven’t seen much of my family since then.
  3. Volunteer — I was really excited about an opportunity for volunteering last fall but it fell through so I hope to find a great place locally to volunteer.
  4. Host a summer picnic party — just because.
  5. Bike the GAP trail in the fall — another one I was hoping to do last year that fell through.
  6. De-junk home — I’m really trying to get rid of all the extra stuff we’ve accumulated that we don’t need. I hate holding on to so much stuff.
  7. Run a half marathon — still planning on the Chicago half in September!
  8. Regularly share recipes on the blog — I have so many great recipes that I love and I really need to get around to sharing because I know you’d love them too!
  9. Go natural — this may be a weird way to put it, but I really think that all these chemicals we’re lathering on our skin and cleaning our home with are disruptive/harmful to our bodies. I want to make more products to use at home and phase out the chemical filled store bought junk.
  10. Go stand-up paddleboarding — I’ve wanted to do this for a few years.
  11. Gain the upper hand on sugar — this has been a long time coming and is an ongoing battle.
  12. Attend a Michael Buble concert — I don’t know if this will be possible before my next birthday since his son is dealing with cancer and it’s unlikely that he’s going to be touring but I’m still going to put this here.
  13. Share music videos on YouTube — My hubby and I are always singing and making music together and since I already have a channel with a lot of my high school/college music, it’s about time to start sharing more music.
  14. Kayak down the Potomac — We went on a river cruise from Georgetown to Alexandria for my bachelorette party a few years ago and I keep thinking how gorgeous it would be to paddle through that area.
  15. Achieve weight goals — My birthday present to myself next year is to feel amazing, healthy, and be carrying around a lot less physical baggage.
  16. Run on the beach — I’ve kind of fantasized about this one and I’ve love to get to cross this off my list this year!
  17. Watch a meteor shower — I’ve never actually had the energy to wake up and get out of bed to see one of these and I really want to do this!
  18. Take a dance class with Brady — I don’t know how he’d feel about this, but we’ve talked about and joked about it before and I think it could be a lot of fun!
  19. Pick up a new hobby.
  20. Sell a painting — I almost said paint more but I decided to challenge myself. I don’t know who would buy my painting, but it’s going to happen.

This is going to be a year full of happiness and lots of personal growth! Have a great weekend everyone!

17 Valentine’s Day Relationship Questions

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Brady works late tonight so I’m alone for most of today :'( That’s a bit of a bummer because this has NOT been my week. Let me tell you a little about it…

My windshield got smashed by a rock. We just dropped $1,000 to fix up my hubby’s car’s brakes. I smashed the BRAND NEW adorable Corningware travel ramekin/mug the day after I bought it. I lost the amazing soup I’d made and found out I didn’t need to bring a lunch because it was a half day at the school…. I sliced into my finger peeling potatoes last night and then last night while we were out on a walk, I tripped and plopped down onto the earth. One of those kinds where you’re fine, but it feels like your wrists are broken for about 2 minutes. I’ve been reminded that all of these things could have been much worse. So now that I’ve vented, I’m moving on!

Since it’s Valentine’s Day, I thought I’d answer a few V-day questions about our relationship that Janae from Hungry Runner Girl shared on her blog yesterday. Continue Reading

The Perfect Valentines Treat

The last week has been a mish-mash of events, emotions and goings on but I’m really excited to share my favorite Valentine’s treat with you today.

Valentine's Day Candy Treats

This Week:

But first a quick review of this week. This last weekend was my father-in-law’s birthday and we had a special party down at Maggiano’s in DC. Brady and I are used to being asked to sing for basically any parties we go to so we prepared a few special little songs to sing for the party. Continue Reading

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year everyone!!! It’s hard to believe we’re in the new year already but I’m hoping that with this new year and this fresh start, 2017 is going to be a special year. Last year ended kind of rough for me. A few months ago I ended up having to deal with something that was unexpected and extremely difficult. Because of that I’ve dealt with another bout of depression and it definitely affected my health. It’s going be hard for a while to come, but time is healing.

While dealing with this heavy load, life has still managed to do some exciting things. Get ready for lots of pictures!

My husband and I moved into our own apartment in mid-November! Moving day was long but it’s nice to be in our own space again.

One of the nice things about moving is that we’re now living very close to the mall and to Centennial Lake. Living close to Centennial is actually one of my favorite things about the move! Continue Reading
