Labor Day Weekend Games and my new Yoga app

There’s something about the sky. There’s a change in the air. The pool no longer seems as inviting and all I can think about is eating more apples and going hiking and camping… Fall is coming and I can’t resist its advances anymore. I love summer but there are many things I love about fall so I’ll try not to be too sad.

Hallelujah for long weekends! I had a rough day Friday and had to cancel our plans of going kayaking because I was doing bad enough that I knew it would mess me up to a level I wasn’t ready to deal with. We went shopping instead for some new pants at Gap for Brady because he starts work next week! He was in love with these really stretchy khakis, it was kind of cute lol. I also picked up a $50 Eddie Bauer shirt for $15 on clearance. It’s going to be my base layer for hiking/camping trips or anything outdoors during the cooler months. We went apple picking and got about 13 pounds of fresh honeycrisps and also got 3-4 pounds of sweet and ripe raspberries.

My brother-in-law and his wife came over for the weekend so we went for a really pretty sunset walk on Saturday evening. My phone died before we got back so I didn’t get any pictures after these ones but the entire sky turned this amazing shade of pink! It was all around and so bright. It was beautiful and made me feel truly happy.

This photo didn’t turn out the best but it’s still really cute <3

Now THIS is what I spent the rest of my long weekend doing. After we came back from a walk, Evan  took a nap so Lauren, Brady and I decided to play a game. As we were going through my list of non-packed-up board games, I mentioned Settlers of Catan and how I’d had it for a few YEARS but I’d never played. We downloaded the tutorial app to help us learn how to play and then played through the game. We set up another game and played through. We were hooked.

We had to take a break when Brady and Evan went to a fantasy draft for their football “bro’s” league Sunday afternoon and when they came back, it was back into gaming. We even played a couple more on Monday before they had to leave and by the end of the weekend, we’d played through 7 games. I won four out of the seven and Brady didn’t win any until the last :-p It was a lot of fun and now it’s hard to believe I’ve owned it for so long and never played! I sense a lot of game nights coming this fall, especially once we’ve moved into our own place!

I mentioned in my September goals post about how I want to work specifically on strengthening/healing my back pain and I’m going to try and do yoga consistently to help me achieve that goal. I downloaded the Gaiam Yoga Studio app because I’d heard some about it and it’s very highly rated. I tried it out a bunch over this weekend and I really, really love it! You can create your own class from their extensive list of poses, or you can choose from pre-made classes that are labeled out by category and difficulty level.

Gaiam Yoga Studio

You can schedule when you want to do a class in the app and it will set off an alarm reminder for you when that time comes and it keeps track of which classes you’ve done and when you did them.

  • I did 30 minutes on Friday (Morning Stretches and Twist and Align)
  • Another 34 minutes on Sunday (Morning Stretches, Twist and Align, and Beginner 1 Cycle)
  • 30 minutes on Monday (Morning Stretches and Beginner Stretches)
  • 15 minutes Tuesday Morning (Morning Stretches)

The voice is soft and soothing, she gives helpful and clear instructions and there’s also  yoga-esque music to set the mood. I’ve enjoyed doing it so far and hopefully with some time I will start to feel improvements in my back.

Monday night I was feeling up to trying out a short run around the neighborhood to see what I can handle because I’d like to do my church’s 5k event in 2 weeks. Brady wasn’t up to running so he did a fast walk while I did a slow jog. I ran the whole time for 1.5 miles at a 13:41 min/mi pace! Not bad considering how things have been lately. I did one of the runner’s yoga stretches after finishing. I feel like part of the reason it didn’t feel too difficult and why it went well was because of the weather. The nights are starting to get cooler and it isn’t super hot and humid all day every day so I was able to control my breathing pretty well. We’ll see how things keep progressing.

Well that was my weekend! Lots of fun and relaxing and time to finish out a short week.

What did you do over the long weekend?!

Do you enjoy doing yoga? Have you tried out the Gaiam app? How does it compare to a real class? I’ve done 1 pilates class before but never yoga and I feel like the only thing specifically missing is the other people and one-to-one instruction.

What fresh fruits and veggies are you looking forward to this fall?
